Dual Action Semi-Rotary Hand Wing Pump

The Excelsior E2 Hand Pump is an excellent off-grid pump for shallow water sources or water storage tanks!

How the Excelsior E2 Hand Pump Works:

1. The handle moves back and forth in a 90 degree arc, which in turn causes the wing with valve set (30) to semi-rotate within the body.
2. The vee valve (31) operates as the inlet check valve.
3. The unit discharges fluid on both strokes of the handle.
4. It must be bolted to a strong vertical surface with the inlet at the bottom or to either side – two mounting lugs are provided.
5. The handle can be installed either pointing up, down, left or right.

• Strong inlet flange, outlet flange and mounting lugs prevent breakage even when subjected to rough treatment.

Freeze-Proof

The Simple Pump is freeze-proof. A 1/16″ weep hole, drilled at 48 inches from the top fitting, allows the water to drain below the frost line and not freeze. For deeper frost lines, a custom weep hole can be drilled farther down at no charge. Another option is the Simple Pump pitless adaptor, which allows the water pipe to run underground to your house.

Easy to Install

If you have a well with a pitless adaptor, you may prefer to install the pump yourself (helper required). Many of our clients install their own pump. You only need simple tools such as Allen wrenches and vice grips — No winch/hoist or specialized tools are needed, as with many other hand pumps. And no cutting or gluing of PVC is required.

Can be Installed on a Wide Well or Cistern

The usual installation of a Simple Pump is on top of the casing of a drilled well. But it can easily be installed in a wide or dug well — e.g. a 3-foot wide well with a concrete liner and a concrete lid… or on the top of a cistern. Usually, a hole would be drilled in the lid, and our mounting plate or adaptor secured with suitable bolts.

Connection for standard 3/4″ hose (use drinking-water-compatible hose) or 3/4″ FNPT pipe.

Holds Prime

After pumping, the water level will slowly drop to the weep hole level. Then a few pumps will bring it up. If the pump is not being used for a while, the water in the pump will slowly drop back down to your water level. No priming is necessary. Just pump to bring the water back to the surface.

Reliable

So durable, it has an expected 50-year lifespan. Aircraft-grade, solid billets of metal are computer machined for maximum precision — much stronger than castings. And because the parts fit together so precisely, wear is greatly reduced. Graphite-impregnated bronze bushings, at the three pump-head pivot points, further increase durability. Routine maintenance consists of replacing the seals. The frequency of this maintenance depends on the amount of use and quality of the water, but is typically between 3 and 10+ years.

Secure

If you are away from your property, for an extended period, you can remove the pump lever and lower the pump head. This leaves your pump inconspicuous and protected (as shown to the right).

The low speed model booster pump has a maximum suction capacity of 20 vertical feet at sea level. Subtract 1 foot for every 1,000 feet of altitude. For example: If your altitude is 4,000 feet, the total suction capacity of the pump will be 16 feet. The suction capacity may be further limited due to intake pipe friction. The intake piping should be 1″ or larger and the pump should be mounted as close to the water source as possible.

How the SQ Protects and Reduces Wear

Voltage Handling

Increased winding temperature caused by undervoltage often results in reduced lifetime. The SQ motor is protected against over and undervoltage, and voltage fluctuation generally.

Soft Start

Soft start ensures a low starting current with a smooth and steady acceleration. This offers excellent starting reliability at low voltage, prevents overload of the mains power, reduces water hammer in the pipe, and reduces pump wear. Low current draw and soft start allows use of smaller gauge wire compared to traditional 4” motors. This can reduce the overall cost of installation.

Power Supply

Low ampere usage makes it possible to connect more appliances to the same fuse group or reduce the size of the power line. Small generators can be used with SQ. Grundfos recommends to use a generator with a capacity 50% higher than rated pump power consumption.

Dry Running Protection

The SQ pump is factory pre-set based on minimum power consumption, and dry-running protection is activated 40 seconds after power is connected to allow priming of the pump. When there is no water in the hydraulics, power consumption is reduced. The SQ stops automatically when below the dry run power limit and restarts automatically within 5 minutes after cut-out.

Compared with a conventional 4” pump and motor, the added features of voltage handling and soft start, power supply, and dry running protection offer simplicity and reliability for your installation.
